Full Scale Visual Prototype:
Looking at a sketch on paper is one thing, but understanding the form in three dimensions is crucial to understanding how the chair will exist in space. A purely visual model made from foam board, PVC and butcher paper taught me I needed real cushions and a proper ottoman. Most importantly, from this step I had to revise a few dimensions.
Orthographic Drawing:
Taking notes from the visual model I began to make edits to the overall dimensions - raised the seat a few inches, angled the ottoman and adjusted the degree on the back rest. A bill of materials was also drawn up. Plywood for the seat, steel tubing for the legs, and foam for the cushions.
Full Scale Functional Prototype:
Taking the revisions from the orthographic I created a full scale functional prototype of my chair. Unfortunately this was the last building we were able to accomplish due to covid-19 and the closing of the build lab facilities on campus. Having several students take a seat on the plywood and foam seat, the loudest comment was there needed to be better cushions. Other than that it was a success.
